For ten years American author Nathan Hill laboured on his debut novel The Nix. And with good result, because various lyrical critics have labelled the book the next Great American Novel. A novel which no less reads ‘like a tv show’ – and guess what: there will be an actual tv show based on the book, featuring Meryl Streep.

Hill (40), who will briefly be visiting the Netherlands, is interviewed by Maarten Westerveen about the creation and reception of his debut, and, of course, the course and outcome of the greatest show on earth, as well as the role the media have played in it: the US presidential elections.

The Nix explores America through three generations. It does so through Samuel Anderson, a writer with a writer’s block as well as a bored teacher at a local university. He has not been in contact with his mother ever since she left him when he was little. Over twenty years after the fact, he suddenly spots her on the news, throwing rocks at an ultra conservative Trump-like politician. The media label her a left-wing radical with a shady past, but this is not the image Samuel has of her.
Samuel decides to write an open-hearted and ruthless biography on his mother – but first, he needs to find her. His search takes the reader from the rural Midwest to New York during the economic crisis, and from the infamous 1968 Chicago riots to the small Norwegian town of Hammerfest, painting a detailed picture of major social and political developments in the Western world over the past decades.

En met resultaat, want het boek is door verschillende lyrische critici alvast bestempeld als de nieuwe Great American Novel. Een roman die leest ‘als een televisieserie’ – en het leuke is: die komt er ook, met onder andere Meryl Streep.

Maarten Westerveen gaat met Hill (40), die kortstondig in Nederland is, in gesprek over de totstandkoming en ontvangst van zijn boek en, natuurlijk, over het verloop en de uitkomst van the greatest show on earth en de rol die de media erin hebben gespeeld: de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen.

De Nix toont drie generaties Verenigde Staten. Dat doet het via hoofdpersoon Samuel Anderson, schrijver met een writer’s block en verveelde leraar op een plaatselijke universiteit. Zijn moeder heeft hij niet meer gezien sinds ze hem als kind in de steek liet. Maar dan ziet hij haar, ruim twintig jaar later, op het nieuws, terwijl ze stenen gooit naar een ultraconservatieve Trump-achtige politicus. De media schilderen haar af als een linkse radicaal met een schimmig verleden, maar dat is niet het beeld dat Samuel van haar heeft.
Samuel besluit een openhartige en meedogenloze biografie over zijn moeder te schrijven. Daarvoor moet hij haar alleen eerst zien te vinden. Samuels zoektocht brengt de lezer van het rurale Midwesten naar het New York ten tijde van de economische crisis, en van de beruchte rellen in 1968 in Chicago naar het stadje Hammerfest in Noorwegen. Zo schetst hij een gedetailleerd beeld van de belangrijke sociaal-politieke ontwikkelingen in het Westen gedurende de laatste decennia.
