American writer Rachel Kushner (The Flamethrowers) is visiting the Netherlands in honour of the publication of her latest novel Club Mars (English language title: The Mars Room). On June 4th, Rachel Kushner will discuss her newest novel with Frederique de Jong (BNR News Radio, NOS Radio 1, Follow The Money). The interview is interspersed with theater by American actress Cené Hale (Boom Chicago).

The Mars Room tells the story of twenty-eight year old Romy Hall, who has recently been convicted to two consecutive life sentences in a maximum security women’s prison facility in California’s Central Valley. The nature of the crime for which she has been convicted is slowly revealed through flahbacks that lay bare the intricate web of her personal circumstances. Poverty, sex, exploitation, anger, motherly love and a lack of means all play a part. Inside prison awaits a new reality: thousands of women hustling for the bare essentials needed to survive; the bluffing and pageantry and casual acts of violence by guards and prisoners alike; and the deadpan absurdity of institutional living. Kushner describes life in prison in an evenly brutal and tragic manner, highlighting personal tragedy and the tiniest of triumphs. Even when you’re imprisoned for life, it ain’t over ’til it’s over.

〰 Op 4 juni gaat Rachel Kushner over haar nieuwe roman in gesprek met Frederique de Jong (BNR Nieuwsradio, NOS Radio 1 Journaal, Follow The Money). Het interview wordt afgewisseld met theater door actrice Cené Hale (Boom Chicago).

Club Mars gaat over de achtentwintigjarige Romy Hall, die onlangs is veroordeeld tot tweemaal levenslang plus nog zes jaar in een maximaal beveiligde vrouwengevangenis in Noord-Californië. De misdaad waarvoor ze veroordeeld is, wordt langzaam onthuld door middel van flashbacks die het onoverzichtelijke web van haar omstandigheden blootleggen. Armoede, seks, uitbuiting, woede, moederliefde en een gebrek aan middelen spelen allemaal een rol. Kushner omschrijft de dagen in de gevangenis even brutaal als tragisch, met aandacht voor de persoonlijke drama’s, piepkleine triomfen en daden van agressie door alle personages.

Zelfs als je levenslang hebt, suggereert Kushner, is het nog niet gedaan tot het voorbij is.

Rachel Kushner (1968) is de enige schrijver die voor zowel haar eerste als tweede roman genomineerd was voor een National Book Award. De vlammenwerpers, haar tweede roman, was een van de meest besproken boeken van 2013 en betekende haar internationale doorbraak. De roman stond boven aan de ‘beste boeken’-lijsten van 2013 van o.a. The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, BBC, Time, Vogue en Slate. De filmrechten werden vlak na verschijning verkocht aan Scott Rudin (producent van o.a. No Country for Old Men) en de vertaalrechten in meer dan tien landen. Kushners werk verscheen onder andere in The New York Times, The Paris Review en The Believer. In 2013 won ze een Guggenheim Fellowship.
