Modar Salama
Modar Salama is a Syrian percussionist and drummer, born in Damascus and currently based in Amsterdam. Trained in both classical and Oriental percussion at the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, Modar has built a rich career performing with jazz, Latin, and Arabic ensembles across the Middle East and beyond.
Before relocating to the Netherlands, he performed with prominent groups such as the Syrian National Orchestra and the Syrian Big Band, touring extensively through Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
In the Netherlands, Modar has focused more deeply on Arabic percussion traditions, collaborating with renowned artists and ensembles such as the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Slagwerk Den Haag, the Amsterdam Andalusisch Orkest, Martin Fondse, and Ellen ten Damme. He is also a frequent guest in music theatre productions with companies like De Nieuw Amsterdam, Space, and Storyteller.
He is a member of several projects including Trio Qasyoun, Dyar Band, Yamm Ensemble (Denmark), Dialogues, and Trio de Mast. His creative work crosses borders and genres, making him a sought-after performer in world music, jazz, classical, and contemporary scenes. Whether on stage in Amsterdam or at international festivals, Modar brings deep musicality, rich rhythm, and a bridge between cultures through his percussion.
